PARISH PLAN - BERGH APTON LOOKS TO THE FUTURE The long-awaited launch of the Parish Plan happened on Friday 28th October 2005 in a packed village hall! The photographs below show the document being handed over to Alison Freeman, chairman of the Parish Council and to Geoff Rivers, Chief Executive of South Norfolk Council (SNC) by Derek Blake. Local newspapers and radio extensively covered the event itself and their response clearly showed that they understood the importance of the document in the context of nationwide parish life. This is best illustrated by the main Leader in the Eastern Evening News. Its opening paragraph said “Planners across Norfolk and the rest of the country should look at what is happening in the small community of Bergh Apton” and it concluded by saying “Village life is precious. We have already lost too many communities while others have been turned into bland and boring urban sprawls” Another article titled “Vibrant village is an example to all” goes into some detail on the contents of the plan and shows that the newspaper’s editorial staff have read the document from cover to cover and understood its significance. They have also talked to SNC officers about its findings and their importance in a District-wide context. When they spoke to Georgina Cole, SNC’s lead officer supporting parishes in the preparation of their Plans, she told them “It’s a great example to other communities around South Norfolk and shows what can happen when you get local people involved in community activities and in thinking constructively about the future”. Also present at the launch was Armana Handley, Community Partnership Officer for SNC who is currently spearheading the preparation of the Council’s LDF (Local Development Framework). The findings of Bergh Apton’s Parish Plan, based on the responses of 95 percent of the village residents, will be of significant value in that process.
