The Bergh Apton Sculpture Trail has been held five times – in 1997, 1999, 2002, 2005 and 2008. They stemmed largely from the imagination of one person, who has been the inspiration of much of Bergh Apton’s creative focus for nearly twenty years,. This inspiration has been coupled with significant support from a hard-core village group working together and refining ideas.
The Sculpture Trails have proved their popularity by attracting significant visitor numbers: to date some 30,000 people, from all over East Anglia, London and other parts of the UK as well as Europe and even the Far East and USA have visited Bergh Apton’s Trails. Over 250 sculptors have exhibited at Bergh Apton and sold their works.
The Sculpture Trails have been successful for a broad range of reasons. Our perception is that these include that it is:-
- Rural but cultural
- Village-like but sophisticated
- Amateur but professional
- Non-commercial but cash-conscious
- Laid-back but enterprising
- Catering for all tastes without patronising.
A comment by a visitor, “It’s not only a pleasure, it’s a privilege”.
The Sculpture Trails are organized by an entirely voluntary group and most of the inhabitants of the village will have been involved. In addition BACAT has provided vital support for village and associated projects.
The Patron of Bergh Apton Community Arts Trust is the Past President, Royal Academy of Arts – Sir Philip Dowson, CBE
