2005 - First Weekend ReviewATTENDANCE RECORDS BROKEN FOR FIRST WEEKENDBergh Apton drew a record number of visitors to its internationally-recognised Sculpture Trail this weekend. Close to three thousand people flocked to this small Norfolk village over Saturday and Sunday to see sculptures and listen to music floating through the air from many of the twenty locations on the Trail. The organisers are delighted with the attendance, and pleased that their arrangements for free parking and free transport around the village enabled so many people to see many of the eighteen private gardens that feature along the Trail in which ninety nine sculptors display almost three hundred works of art for the three weekends of the Trail. In one garden alone, where the numbers of people passing through their garden gate are monitored, two thousand four hundred people were counted. Maggie Smith, chairman of the organisers said “the enthusiasm of our visitors for our event makes all the hard work of planning worthwhile. We have recognised old friends from past Trails and have met those who are here for the first time, all of whom found something that gave them pleasure, whether it is sculpture, music or the simple pleasure of riding our lanes in the tractor-drawn transport”. Sally Leigh, Publicity Manager for the event, reported that the village website was flooded with messages from happy visitors who had arrived home. A typical comment, received on Sunday night, said “Hi. Firstly let me congratulate you all on a fantastic sculpture trail. A friend took me there yesterday and it was a truly exciting and wonderful day out - not only the sculpture but the gardens were so lovely. I really enjoyed the singing in the church and all along the Trail”. The Sculpture Trail is open over the next two weekends (22nd /23rd May and 4th /5th June) from 10.30 am to 6.00 pm
