November 2004
The next Bergh Apton Sculpture Trail will be entitled “Cairn”, and will be held in late May/early June next year, 2005. The organisers, Bergh Apton Community Arts Trust, expect the number of visitors to exceed the 8,000 or more who attended in 2002. This will be the fourth Sculpture Trail and, to date, 65 professional sculptors have already signed up to show their works in the 20 venues around this small Norfolk village that turns itself into a huge open air gallery for three weekends in the summer. Music can be heard along the trail provided by visiting musicians and refreshments as well as picnic areas are available. Visitors walk, cycle or ride on free transport around more than seven miles of lanes and footpaths to see the exhibition. The Trail will be open on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd May, Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th May and Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th June 2005. Each day opens at 10.00am and finishes at 6.00 pm. The organisers are hard at work planning the Trail that will include a programme of music. Maggie Smith, chairman of BACAT, said “Sculpture and music work well together and we shall sprinkle the Trail with sounds from orchestral through brass to country”. A major feature of the Trail will be a second showing of the village’s planets that made the headlines in October 2003 when Pluto was stolen from its display site on a lane in Bergh Apton, but was recovered some six months later with no serious damage. The nine planets were created at an Arts workshop in the village, and will be shown with the Sun, in produced in stained glass by professional artist Paquita Norris as the focal point of the display.
