Bergh Apton's Sculpture Trails - General Sculpture Trail Information

Bergh Apton is a small village located some 7 miles south east of Norwich, in Norfolk. It is a widely scattered community with no clear geographical centre, and made up of several minute hamlets. It has traceable history starting with Anglo Roman and Anglo Saxon burial grounds. Today it contains some 400 inhabitants. The Bergh Apton community has demonstrated its willingness to take on challenges and seek new paths, both individually and collectively.

  • A series of mainly art-related events were initiated:
  • Two “Sunflower Trail” open gardens (1992 and 1993)
  • The Bergh Apton Experience - village at working inside out (1995)
  • The first (1997) and subsequent Sculpture Trails (see below)
  • Workshops, concerts and entertainment events, some in association with Creative Arts East.

The Bergh Apton Community Arts Trust (BACAT) was formed after the second Trail with a Constitution, the key objects of which are to:

  • Provide opportunities for the village inhabitants to work together as a community
  • Foster the talents latent in the village by stimulating and using artistic, creative and organisational strengths
  • Bring the world of the arts to a rural community many of whom may rarely, if ever, go to exhibitions or museums
  • Involve and be supported by as many individuals and bodies in the village as possible
  • To apply surplus funds to future projects and charitable purposes, with which the village has connections.

The Patron of Bergh Apton Community Arts Trust is the Past President, Royal Academy of Arts – Sir Philip Dowson, CBE
