Bergh Apton’s own Gallopavophagy Extravaganza  By Derek Blake

The practice of stuffing both oneself and the turkey in celebration of Christmas goes back a very long way, probably to the early 1500s.  However, until our Bernard came along, turkeys were neither plentiful nor cheap.  No such problems at our lunch for the senior members of the village!  This annual event hits new highs each succeeding year – there simply are not enough superlatives available.

From the royal arrival of Dora (pictured left, being escorted in by Kevin  Parfitt), Eileen and Ena in the white Roller (suitably chauffeured by owner Bob in full livery), through the reception, magnificent spread and entertainment – all ably guided by Kevin, what a fantastic all-embracing day.  Even the weather held off for the duration

Who in the village was not involved?  Consider; the transport, the Hall arrangements, the supplies, the cooking, the superb precision waiter service (provided by the younger members of our village complete with our own major domo), the washers up, the clearers up etc. etc!  Truly a total Community ‘happening’ that leaves a warm glow of happiness and belonging that defines Bergh Apton.

What a wonderful way to approach the festive season and what a telling contrast to prelude the terrible Asian events that overtook the world on Boxing Day.

Both in their very different ways demonstrate the true meaning of neighbourliness and inter-dependence that we all owe to each other.  What a pity that it should take such a tragedy to unlock the latent human kindness and kindred spirit that hides within us all.

Perhaps the best way of summing up the lunch is to quote directly from a resident, “Long after the taste has gone, I will go on thinking of the kindness that went on in thinking of me”.  Indeed, the warm glow lives on, the photographs speak for themselves.

Thank you, everyone, see you again for the 2005 Christmas Lunch
