Summer Outing to Castle Acre

On June 9th 2007 a group of members and friends visited Castle Acre near King’s Lynn. Met by Helen Paterson, an experienced archaeologist and guide, we spent a wonderful day being shown around the village, castle, church and priory. Helen described the history of the area and put both old and newer buildings into context in a most interesting and vivid way.

From the medieval castle, which was originally a fortified house, the extensive water management system in the meadows, the fascinating parish church (complete with porch!) to the breathtaking priory, this is an area well worth a visit. Even without a guide there would be a great deal of information available to the private visitor.

The weather was superb, the local hostelries and cafes provided excellent refreshments and some of our party took advantage of Helen’s beautiful walled Victorian garden to enjoy their picnics. We all also enjoyed spotting the various locations used in the recent “Kingdom” television series. We will have to try hard to find such a successful venue for next year. Suggestions are welcome, please!
