Church Modernisation

We are alight!!

Elektra, run by Mark Davies, who’s first marital home for 11 years was in Prospect Place, have completed the re-electrification of the church. They have worked hard and with commitment. We are delighted with the new lighting, which really brings out the best features of the building, giving us dramatic possibilities. Elektra did not have it all their way – there was a deadline of a wedding and then two funerals, around which they had to grope their way and fit the wiring. So thank you Elektra – a job well executed.

Behind the scenes many people have been beavering away doing building work, painting, trenching and earthmoving to enable Elektra to focus on the electrical bits. Lorie Lain-Rogers, John Ling, Dennis Moye, Kevin Parfitt, Robert Waters, Chris Roe. And then there were the cleaners – Evy Sayer, Audrey Harvey, Pat Waters, Liz Meynell, Shirley Rimmer, Cynthia Whiting, Maria, John & Richard Phillips, Roy & Jean Flowerdew, Hilary Ling. Without them the church would have not been up to scratch and so both Bridget & John Hemmant and the Southgate family were able to use your church without getting too dirty!!!

The Home team has been brilliant – to all, so many, a very big thank you.

And it is important to say again that, on top of all the hard work, none of this would have been possible without your real generosity.

The church is now more useable, more attractive and more comfortable. Come and see and experience the improvements. And Sunday would be a great moment to start!

Christian Unity Service - Milton & Ruth Harris get Papal Blessing – 13th January 2008

Still decorated for Christmas, a very special service took place. A large gathering joined the applause for Ruth & Milton, after Fr Mark Hackeson (from Poringland) read from a “scroll” the congratulations and blessing from the Pope. How better than at a Service of Christian Unity to celebrate the 40th wedding anniversary of this couple - a Roman Catholic and an Anglican.

Congratulations Ruth and Milton.

Yvonne Sired gave us an insight into her important work and life in Pakistan and Afghanistan. She works for publishers doing translations into Pakistani and Afghan languages.

Peter Knight and Wendy Shaw were also joined by Sr Violet Evans (All Hallows, Ditchingham), Donald Hilton (URC), Derek Grimshaw (Methodist) & Jonathan Robinson (Quaker), all of whom placed together copies of the Bibles they use, demonstrating “Unity”. And Jonathan led the congregation in ‘silent’ prayer - an important moment. We were so delighted that many representatives of their congregations were also able to be in Bergh Apton; one result was the reciting of the Lord’s Prayer in English, Korean, German, Italian, French and Czech.

Following the service, the Village Hall seemed crammed with everyone who had for a pot- luck lunch, bringing some real culinary perfections for all to share.

Easter Art Experience

Last year twenty people, under The Revd Wendy Shaw’s guidance, went on a journey to create pieces for the church to try to answer the question “Who do you say I am?” A delightful little book has been produced containing photographs of the works. Every house will have received a copy in time for Easter 2008. We hope you will find time to look at and enjoy the contents. The book has been generously funded by the Norwich Diocese and the Bergh Apton Community Arts Trust.

Churchyard Clean up

A large party came together on 1st March to clean up the churchyard. Trees and branches were cleared, paths weeded, nettles poisoned. Over the coming months the conservation areas, containing interesting and unusual plants are being improved. Regular working parties are being arranged to ensure the churchyard is kept in a satisfactory condition. Everyone that has an interest in the state of the churchyard, who would like to take pride in it, please come and spend an hour or so to help keep it that way.
